Pangasinan’s power supply has received a boost following the completion and energization of ACEN Corp.’s 60-megawatt (MW) San Manuel Solar project, a new renewable energy facility expected to supply electricity to thousands of households and support the province’s growing energy needs.
The P2.8-billion solar farm, located in the town of San Manuel, is ACEN’s first renewable energy project in Pangasinan and forms part of the Ayala group’s broader push to expand clean energy capacity in Northern Luzon.
First ACEN Solar Project In Pangasinan
ACEN said the San Manuel Solar facility marks a significant addition to the province’s energy infrastructure, contributing new capacity to the Luzon grid while helping diversify the local power supply with renewable sources.
The project was developed following ACEN’s acquisition of Sinocalan Solar Power Corp. in December 2022 through a deed of absolute sale of shares with Sungrow Power Renewables Corp. and Havilah AAA Holdings Corp., which enabled the company to proceed with construction.
Household Coverage
The solar farm consists of 108,752 ground-mounted photovoltaic panels and is expected to generate approximately 94 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of renewable electricity annually. Based on company estimates, this output is sufficient to supply the energy needs of around 55,000 households each year.
ACEN said the project will help strengthen electricity availability in Pangasinan and surrounding areas, particularly as demand continues to grow across Northern Luzon.
Environmental Benefits
Beyond increasing supply, the San Manuel Solar project is expected to deliver environmental benefits. ACEN estimates that the facility will help avoid more than 58,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, supporting national efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition to cleaner energy sources.
The project aligns with the Philippine government’s renewable energy targets, which aim to increase the share of renewables in the country’s power generation mix.
Grid Connection And Future Expansion
The solar farm is directly connected to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) through a dedicated 1.8-kilometer transmission line linked to the 69-kilovolt San Manuel Substation, allowing efficient and reliable delivery of power to the grid.
ACEN has previously said the site has expansion potential, with capacity that could be scaled up to as much as 100 MW, subject to future development plans and market conditions.
ACEN’s Renewables Strategy
The Pangasinan project adds to ACEN’s growing domestic renewables portfolio and reflects the company’s continued focus on clean energy development across the country.
“As ACEN continues to scale its clean energy investments across Northern Luzon and beyond, the company remains focused on enabling a just, inclusive, and sustainable energy transition for the Philippines,” the company said.
ACEN’s attributable renewable energy capacity currently totals about 7 gigawatts, including operational projects, assets under construction, and projects backed by signed agreements. The company also manages renewable energy assets in Australia, Vietnam, India, Indonesia, Laos, and the United States.
Late last year, ACEN announced it had fully transitioned its generation portfolio to renewable energy following the divestment of its conventional power assets. On Monday, ACEN shares rose by one centavo to close at P3.06 apiece.
