SN Aboitiz Power (SNAP), a joint venture between Aboitiz Renewables Inc. and Norway-based Scatec ASA, is set to begin construction of two battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Benguet province, adding 80 megawatts (MW) of flexible capacity to support grid stability in Luzon.

In disclosures and company statements released this week, Aboitiz Power Corp. said SNAP has reached financial close for the projects, which consist of a 40-MW BESS at the Binga Hydroelectric Power Plant and another 40-MW BESS at the Ambuklao Hydroelectric Power Plant.

Both facilities are co-located with existing hydropower assets and are designed to provide ancillary services to the Luzon grid through the reserves market.

Improving Grid Reliability

The BESS facilities will store electricity from the grid and release it when needed to help balance supply and demand and improve overall power quality.

“Battery energy storage is critical for grid stability, providing fast-response services to manage real-time frequency fluctuations and enabling the integration of variable renewable energy sources,” SNAP said.

The projects are tied to the second phase of development at the Binga and Ambuklao hydropower plants. Construction is expected to begin following financial close, with commercial operations targeted later this year, according to earlier company statements.

Expanding Energy Storage Portfolio

Once the Benguet projects are completed, SNAP’s total BESS capacity in operation and under construction will reach 160 MW. This includes the 24-MW battery energy storage facility at the Magat Hydroelectric Power Plant, which has been delivering ancillary services since entering commercial operations in 2024.

Additional storage projects are also in the pipeline. SNAP has said a 40-MW BESS at Binga and a 16-MW BESS at Magat are scheduled to start commercial operations in 2026, further expanding the company’s role in providing grid support services.

“The new capacity builds on SNAP’s growing energy storage portfolio,” the company said, noting that battery systems complement hydropower by enhancing flexibility and responsiveness during periods of fluctuating demand and supply.

Supporting The Energy Transition

SNAP and Aboitiz Renewables said demand for flexible and reliable ancillary services is expected to grow as the Philippines scales up renewable energy under its energy transition goals. Battery storage is increasingly seen as a key enabler for maintaining grid reliability while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

Aboitiz Renewables, the renewable energy arm of AboitizPower, has set a target of reaching 4,600 MW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. “Through continued investments in hydro, battery energy storage, and other renewable technologies, Aboitiz Renewables and SNAP are advancing a more resilient and flexible portfolio that supports long-term energy security and sustainability,” the company said.

Project Pipeline

Beyond battery storage, SNAP is continuing to expand its renewable energy portfolio. The company has previously said it has nearly 300 MW of capacity in its hydropower project pipeline, along with a potential ground-mounted solar project that had been under evaluation.

Aboitiz Renewables has also been expanding its solar footprint. Its most recent acquisition is a greenfield solar project in Bohol province, purchased through a ₱478-million deal. The solar facility is expected to begin commercial operations by 2027.

Together, these developments demonstrate SNAP’s growing role in supporting grid stability and advancing renewable energy deployment in the country.
