When Michelle Mariacos was a young girl in Barangay Ampusongan, Bakun, Benguet, she drew a simple stick figure—herself in a white coat with a stethoscope draped around her neck. To others, it was just a sketch, but to Michelle, it symbolized something bigger.

“That little drawing was my dream. I wanted to become a doctor, even if it felt  impossible at the time,” she shared.

For countless girls in remote communities, a medical career feels unattainable due to financial struggles, limited educational access, and societal norms. But Michelle never let that stop her.

Her parents, both government employees, earned only ₱8,000 per month. Covering daily expenses was a challenge, and paying college tuition for three children seemed impossible.

Michelle dreamed of becoming a doctor but worried about the financial strain on her family. “At one point, I considered taking a different course, one that was more affordable, but not what I really wanted,” she recalled

Grabbing a golden opportunity

Michelle’s path took a new direction when she was offered a Hedcor scholarship in 2016. Hedcor, which manages three run-of-river hydropower facilities in Bakun, Benguet, contributes to local areas by supporting learning and development programs.

With Hedcor’s financial assistance covering books, school fees, and other academic expenses, Michelle could concentrate on her studies. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy at Saint Louis University as a stepping stone to medical school. Her hard work and academic excellence later secured her a full government scholarship, helping her pursue her dream of becoming a doctor.

Aside from monetary assistance, Hedcor offered guidance and inspiration, equipping scholars like Michelle with the confidence to overcome the hurdles of higher education.

“Hedcor’s scholarship was more than just a financial assistance. It was a vote of confidence, an assurance that my dream was worth pursuing,” she stated.

Fulfilling her childhood dream

After countless hours of studying and unwavering determination, Michelle successfully passed the Physician Licensure Exam in October 2024, officially becoming a doctor. She now serves as Dr. Michelle Mariacos, Medical Officer III at Benguet General Hospital.

“Becoming a doctor was never just about achieving a personal goal—it was about giving back to the community,” she revealed. “I understand what it’s like to lack access to resources, and now, I have the opportunity to provide care for those in similar situations.”

Outside her duties at the hospital, Michelle dedicates her time to humanitarian efforts, bringing vital healthcare to remote areas through outreach initiatives and medical missions.

“I owe so much to the people who supported me, including Hedcor. Now, it’s my turn to do the same for others. I want young women to know that they belong in any profession they choose, including medicine,” she said.

“When we invest in education, we create opportunities not just for individuals, but for entire communities,” stated Noreen Vicencio, Hedcor’s Vice President for Corporate Services as she highlighted its impact on gender equality. “Dr. Mariacos’ story is an example of how access to education can break barriers and open doors for women in any field they choose to pursue.”

Meanwhile Hedcor President and COO Rolando Pacquiao shared his admiration for scholars who have thrived under the program. “At Hedcor, we are dedicated to providing opportunities that create a supportive learning environment,” he said. “Through our scholarships and financial assistance programs, we aim to empower young individuals to overcome challenges and realize their full potential.”
