BuhaWind Energy Philippines, a collaboration between Copenhagen Energy and PetroGreen Energy Corp. led by Yuchengco, anticipates generating 24,000 employment opportunities over the two-year construction period of its 2,000-megawatt offshore wind farm in Northern Luzon, marking it as one of the most advanced wind energy projects in the country.
The development of the BuhaWind project heavily relies on Currimao Port in Ilocos Norte, which will not only facilitate the construction but also contribute to creating sustainable jobs over its 30-year operational span.
Government Support: Repurposing Ports for Offshore Wind Industry
BuhaWind has expressed its support for the recent announcement from the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) regarding repurposing three key ports to bolster the nation’s expanding offshore wind industry.
Additionally, the company is actively engaged in two other wind projects, each with a 1,000 MW capacity, in Northern Mindoro and East Panay. The secondary priority port, Sta. Clara, in Batangas, is expected to assist the Northern Mindoro project and supply green electricity to the region.
Industry Recognition: Commendation from Copenhagen Energy and PetroGreen Energy CEOs
CEO of Copenhagen Energy, Jasmin Bejdić, commended the efforts of the DOE and PPA in advancing offshore wind in the Philippines, emphasizing the alignment of port repurposing with positive developments such as the upcoming offshore wind Green Energy Auction in the second quarter of 2025 and grid expansion plans by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines. Francisco G. Delfin Jr., the president and CEO of PetroGreen Energy, hailed the port repurposing as a “game-changer” for the country’s wind energy sector, emphasizing the crucial role of Currimao Port in positioning the Philippines as a significant player in the regional and global offshore wind market.
