The University of the Philippines Los Baños wants to bring back its cycling culture in a new sustainable post-pandemic era. In collaboration with Tipaklong Sustainable Mobility Corporation, it is set to pilot a ride-sharing system on campus.

Cyclers will be able to use an app to rent e-bikes and e-scooters from the company following a feasibility study. Implementing this will determine key information such as the quantity of trips, ride distance, and conserved carbon dioxide emissions.

Through this, UPLB sets in motion their Green Mobility Initiative with the goal of promoting sustainable transportation. Radical change awaits the university community with its Transportation System and Traffic Management Master Plan, with the promise of more bike racks and lanes throughout the campus. Furthermore, he UPLB Security and Safety office will now be patrolling on Tipaklong bicycles.

UPLB vice chancellor for community affairs Roberto Cereno says, “As a national university, we need to be conscious of our carbon footprint and proactively engage our constituents with our efforts to be steadfast stewards of our environment. One way of looking at it is by focusing on our transport system.”

UPLB’s efforts toward sustainability may be successful in creating a blueprint for other universities to follow suit and contribute to the cause.
