Ramon Ang’s SMC Global Light and Power Corporation captured the biggest share of projects in the Department of Energy’s (DOE) fourth Green Energy Auction (GEA-4), strengthening the firm’s foothold in the renewable sector. Citicore Renewable Energy Corporation (CREC) also ranked among the top winners, underscoring the dominance of major conglomerates in clean energy.

SMC came out on top, securing more than 2,700 megawatts (MW) in new capacity. Its winning bids cover major solar ventures, including floating solar projects in Angat and large-scale farms in Mindanao, particularly in Cauayan and Malita.

CREC followed with close to 1,000 MW awarded across solar and storage projects in Pagbilao, Silay, Bolbok, and Isabela. Meanwhile, Jacinto Ng’s Joy-Nostalg Solaris dominated rooftop solar submissions.

Other awardees

Foreign players also made headway, with China’s Envision Energy Philippines winning about 760 MW of wind projects in Luzon and the Visayas, while Econergy Renewable Power Philippines picked up nearly 350 MW. In floating solar, Nortesol/Newasia dominated with more than 700 MW spread across Laguna and nearby areas through its partner firms.

Among the other successful bidders were Freya Renewables with 150 MW, Northern Sun Power with 190 MW, and Ilosong Wind Corporation with 200 MW. San Nicolas Wind Corporation also secured 200 MW, while Quezon Wind Energy Corporation landed 208 MW.

The latest auction awarded 9,423 MW of renewable energy projects, meeting nearly 88% of the DOE’s 10,653 MW goal. According to the agency, any remaining unsubscribed capacity would be opened to other eligible bidders to maximize the uptake of renewable energy projects.

Projects in the pipeline

The DOE outlined a staggered rollout for projects awarded under the fourth Green Energy Auction. By 2026, the agency expects 25 ground-mounted solar farms to go online, alongside three integrated solar and energy storage systems (IRESS), four rooftop solar arrays, and four onshore solar developments.

The following years will see a steady stream of completions: a dozen ground-mounted solar projects in 2027; ten more of the same by 2028, together with six floating solar plants, six onshore wind facilities, and four IRESS projects.

The balance of 17 projects, spanning solar, wind, floating installations, and hybrid systems, is scheduled for completion by 2029.

Winning developers are now moving to the compliance phase, where they must submit an affidavit of undertaking, post a performance bond, and obtain a system impact study from the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).These requirements are designed to confirm project feasibility and guarantee that committed capacities will be delivered and integrated into the grid.
