SN Aboitiz Power Group (SNAP) has inked a construction deal with the Chinese firm GEDI to expand its battery energy storage system (BESS) facility at the Magat hydroelectric power plant in Ramon, Isabela.

Last December 19, 2024, the two companies formalized engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) agreements to develop the 16-megawatt (MW) Magat BESS Phase 2. SNAP is a joint venture between Aboitiz Power and Norway-based renewable energy solutions provider Scatec, while international engineering company GEDI is a subsidiary of China Energy Engineering Group.

SNAP announced that the expansion will build on the 24-MW Magat BESS Phase 1, which began commercial operations in January 2024—a significant milestone in the company’s growth targets.

Joseph Yu, SNAP president and CEO, reiterated the company’s commitment to powering positive change through renewable energy.

“We are committed to providing innovative and sustainable energy solutions,” Yu said. “The Magat BESS expansion underscores SNAP Group’s mission to lead in the renewable energy space and accelerate the country’s transition to a more sustainable energy future.”

Battery energy storage systems enable greater power system flexibility, enhance the integration of renewable energy to an existing power grid, and provide more reliable and affordable electricity in isolated grids and off-grid communities.

“One of the most unique elements about electricity is that, unlike other basic utilities like water, it cannot be stored efficiently and over a very long duration. The power captured by solar rooftop panels can’t be used to power up a home five days later when the sky is overcast,” explained Joseph Lacson, Aboitiz Power’s chief investment officer, in an article on building energy security.

“Advancements in battery technology have, however, enabled innovative energy companies to store surplus power to be released later to the power grid when it is most needed,” said Lacson.

At present, SNAP has a total attributable net sellable capacity of 201.55 MW, with four existing facilities across three provinces in the Philippines.
