SN Aboitiz Power Group (SNAP)-Benguet marked its 17th anniversary on July 10, 2025, at the Binga Hydroelectric Power Plant in Itogon, Benguet, bringing together community leaders, industry collaborators, and team members under the theme “Charting New Horizons.”

The celebration highlighted the company’s evolution from a hydropower operator into a player in emerging technologies like battery energy storage systems (BESS). As part of its commitment to the country’s energy transition, SNAP-Benguet reaffirmed its focus on innovation, sustainability, and creating shared value in the communities it serves.

SNAP President and CEO Joseph Yu expressed pride in the company’s 17-year journey and optimism for its future, noting that its foray into battery energy storage reflects a firm commitment to “the energy transition while ensuring that we continue to deliver reliable and responsible power.”

Focusing on social programs

Ahead of the anniversary celebration, SNAP-Benguet staff led a series of community-centered activities, such as a blood donation drive, a mental health awareness session, and a clean-up effort in the area.

As a show of its social commitment, SNAP-Benguet signed a memorandum of agreement on July 9 with Barangay Tinongdan, led by Barangay Chairman Edwin Atumpag, to support special corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects. The agreement outlines funding for initiatives aligned with SNAP’s sustainability focus areas, including ecological protection, economic development, wellness, and learning.

In his remarks, Yu highlighted the company’s solid roots in hydropower and its increasing investment in new energy technologies. “We hope to continue supporting local development and the country’s energy goals,” he said.

The celebration highlighted the crucial role of joint efforts among government, communities, and the private sector in advancing energy security and sustainable development. Vice Mayor Alain Xavier “Dax” Godio expressed his well wishes for SNAP-Benguet’s continued success and reaffirmed the local government’s commitment to ongoing collaboration.

Solar shift

Formed through a partnership between Aboitiz Power Corp. (AP) and Norway-based Scatec, SNAP is actively working to diversify its energy portfolio with the addition of solar power projects.

Yu said the company is expanding beyond its hydropower foundation, with solar and battery storage projects already in motion. It is also accelerating preparations to roll out up to 200 megawatts (MW) of energy storage, advancing toward key investment decisions.

“We still have hydro projects in the works, but the third leg is solar plants, and we intend to be in all to help the industry along,” disclosed Yu.

Scatec, based in Oslo, is a global renewable energy provider focused on expanding clean energy access in emerging markets. With 4.6 gigawatts (GW) of projects operating or underway across four continents, the company develops, builds, and manages renewable power plants.

AP is the power arm of the Aboitiz Group, managing investments in generation, distribution, and retail electricity in the Philippines. It aims to deliver reliable, affordable energy while minimizing environmental impact and supporting host communities.

SNAP operates several renewable energy facilities, including the 112.5-MW Ambuklao and 140-MW Binga hydropower plants in Benguet, the 360-MW Magat plant on the Isabela-Ifugao border, the 8.5-MW Maris hydro, and a 24-MW battery energy storage system in Isabela.
