While electric vehicles (EVs) have gained popularity in the United States and Europe, many Filipinos are still curious about the experience of owning and driving one. A common concern is how to manage running out of charge. Unlike fuel-powered vehicles, which can easily find gas stations in nearly every city and town, the locations of EV charging stations can be a source of stress for many electric car drivers.

Benefits of Traveling by EV

Krystal Gayle Agbulig, the public relations manager for SM City Cauayan, acknowledges the apprehension many Filipinos feel about new technology. She encourages them to consider fossil fuel alternatives like EVs to reduce their carbon emissions, conserve energy, and protect the environment. This is a powerful motivation to make the switch to EVs.

In response to these concerns, 62 SM malls nationwide have established EV charging stations equipped with Wallbox Type 2 plugs for your convenience. This initiative is designed to make your EV journey stress-free and enjoyable, ensuring that you can easily find a charging station when needed.

Agbulig recently oversaw the launch of SM Supermalls’ newest EV charging station in Isabela, strategically located to allow EV owners to drive to Baguio City from SM City Cauayan with minimal stress. Depending on the model, an EV’s average distance on a single charge ranges from 300 kilometers (km) to 500 km. At these stations, you simply park your car, plug it in, and enjoy the amenities of the mall while your car charges.

Route Overview

She also mentioned that the shortest route from Tuguegarao City in Cagayan province to Baguio, approximately 316 kilometers, is via the Kayapa (Nueva Vizcaya)-Ambuklao Road (Benguet). The distance from Cauayan City to Baguio City is 233 km by road. Upon reaching the Philippines’ summer capital, EVs can recharge their batteries at SM Baguio within an hour.

Agbulig highlighted that electric cars perform well in mountainous terrain like Baguio due to their “powerful torque and regenerative braking. “

Charging Infrastructure

The SM EV charging stations in urban centers are energy-efficient and can support their daily operations. A significant advantage is that charging at any of these stations is free. “From Luzon to Visayas and Mindanao, you can charge your electric car without the fear of incurring high costs,” Agbulig stated.

Emphasizing that going green should be relatively inexpensive, SM is ramping up initiatives to transform its transportation methods and minimize carbon emissions. “Traveling costs can be reduced with EV charging stations spreading throughout the provincial malls,” Agbulig noted.

These EV charging stations in SM Supermalls are part of the sustainability initiatives under the SM Green Movement. During the launch, Agbulig quoted SM Supermalls President Steven Tan: “Aside from advocating air conservation and clean energy through this innovation, we also champion solid waste management, water conservation, energy efficiency, and disaster resilience for a greener, safer tomorrow.”
